Even though rape has likely occurred for as long as humankind has existed, there has only been a concerted effort to better understand the issue and meet the needs of survivors since the early 1970s.

Before COVERSA, (Collection of Victim Evidence Regarding Sexual Assault), a victim's only option to receive treatment and guidance after being sexually assaulted, was to go to an Emergency Department where they often had to wait several hours in a busy, public waiting area. As a consequence of delay in meeting their physical and emotional needs, many victims decided it was not worth the effort or embarrassment to report their assault.

COVERSA is a non-profit organization established to provide a comprehensive exam for the assault victim and continuity of care in conjunction with SANE and MOCSA (Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault) in the privacy of a quiet, community based setting.

The advisory board for COVERSA includes distinguished criminal justice professionals from several counties. This collaboration aids in the facilitation of the apprehension and conviction of the rapist.
