COVERSA, a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, is dedicated to providing quality, compassionate post sexual assault patient care and improving community collaboration efforts as it relates to sexual assault education and prevention.
COVERSA’s mission is to improve the collection of forensic evidence, provide acute intervention services, collaborate with legal and judicial representatives.
Before COVERSA, a victim’s only option to receive treatment and guidance after being sexually assaulted was to go to an emergency department. In many instances, these individuals had to wait several hours in busy, congested waiting areas and in some cases be examined by doctors and nurses not specifically trained in sexual assault, and who lacked the proper sensitivity to handle sexual assault patients. Consequently, many victims opted not to go through with the exam. Thus, their physical care and emotional needs were left unmet.
Today, COVERSA--along with its sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs)--has sexual assault outreach centers in Clay, Jackson, Lafayette, and Ray Counties in Missouri.
